"This is a tutorial of a wash construction with the Gerber recipe. I know its already here in another thread but this ones has some pics to carry along the beginner and just for something to look at for all the seasoned amung us. So lets get started and I hope you enjoy and even learn something.
The best part about this recipe is all this stuff can be found at your local grocery store.

This is the recipe for a 5 gallon wash....
1 8oz box of Gerber Babyfood
9lbs of sugar
3 Beanno Tabs
A squirt of lemon juice
A dash of Epson salt
Brewhaus nutrients - follow the directions on the jug
And the yeast of your choice they all work.....If you use a yeast like a Turbo or Whiskey w/ AG dont add extra nutrients


Heat up to near boiling 2 gallons of water and add everthing but the yeast, then top off with the hose to fill your fermenter and once its cool add the yeast of your choice.

As you can see I used 3 different yeasts just because I had them and needed to use em up. Also the nutrients that came from BH. The lemon juice is a Publix brand. And the Beanno well its just beanno.
Any single pack of those will work or you can use all three....one pack or all three will have the same effect it might just take a little longer to finish with less yeast but no real difference in the finished product. So if all you have is one pack well no problem just go with it --it will still work fine.

"Whilst my water was heating up to close to boiling I added the juice and beanno along with 2 spoons of Epsom salt and a generous sprinkle of the Brewhaus yeast nutrients. As for the Epsom salt sorry it wasn't shown but the carton is really yucky and I did'nt want it in this thread forever.

the next pics are of the sugar and babyfood in my fermenter --before -- and --after the addition of the water I just heated up to near boiling. It melted the sugar very nicely since it was very hot.Cool

"Here I am useing the garden hose to add water to the fermenter with it set to jet...as you can see its really foaming and thats what you want. That aeration is adding O2 back the wash which of course will help with fermention. Oh yeah we're gettin close now.

"Now at this stage the fermenter is full and the yeast is waiting to be added. The temp of my wash was 84F at the time of pitching my yeast. Now to me that is a good starting temp but just a tad high for fermentation. And I used all 3 packs of yeast just to use em up but you dont have to have that much.

"After cool down and fermenter lockdown I placed the jug in my fermenter/chiller and set it to 68F. Now I know it wont hit that temp for a few hours anyway because the fermenter is still 84F --remember??

"So this should ferment for about 12-15 days to get a good finish and settle and then I'll find a day to run it.

So in conclusion this is really easy to gather ingrediants and construct and still the way you want. Any yeast you choose will work these are just what I had on hand. So happy stillin and hope this is something that will help get a newbie over the jitters hump and givera go."

The last post of mine was 1:30 and its now 2:50 and my airlock is already bubbling. NOW THATS FAST. I dont think the F/Cller is down to fermentation temp yet but its off and running. I even thought that the liquid yeast may have been too old to get going but shes building a head of steam as we speak. WOOOHOOO.

Well my temp is steadily holding at 68F this to me is a good midline temp for minimal ester and aldhyde production. Day three and still bubbling away.
I opened the fermenter to havea looksee thats why it says 69F."

Well I was thinking we was looking at a pic of a gauge showing the temp of your wash...but maybe not..lol.

That is correct - the Gerber wash IS fermenting at this temp. A lager would ferment at 34-36F.

"Ok so this is day #8 and I'm gonna let it warm up a bit, this should really dry it out. It should be ready to run in a few more days.Cool
At this stage in the fermentation the temp change shouldn't be a bad thing, the biggest growth of the yeast is over by now.Cool

That the best looking temp gauge noticeable in a while. Gives us candid shot looking down inside the fermenter. Thanks.

well as you can see its still quite murky and I noticed that it still has a sizzleing action going on inside. Thats to be expected were on day 9 now but its getting closer. I'll givera another week anyway and then check it again. Although I dont think it will get much clearer it should settle out pretty soon.Cool"
