How can I measure the alcohol content in a homemade brandy and be as accurate as possible to determine the proof

"I have only ever used an alcometer.
It works on the specific gravity - exactly the same as a hydrometer for wine and beer but you don't have to do any calculations to figure it out.
Most wine kit stores sell them for 5 or 10 bucks."
