"I decided I need a new hobby. I've been toying with the idea of building a still for years and I think I'm going for it. The best plans I've found on the net were at http://www.moonshine-still.com/page2.htmThe one I was looking at is the valved reflux model on a beer keg. Has anyone built this from those plans, and how would you compare it to commercially available columns? Are there better plans? Also I've never soldered with a torch, just a soldering iron, is it the same concept and can I make good if not pretty joints with little practice? More questions coming. "I've thought of another (few) questions:
From what I've read the reflux type still is far superior to a simple pot still.
The questions are:
Between an internal and valved reflux design which is better? Probably a Reebok vs. Nike thing?
As I understand it with an internal model the reflux rate is controlled by the flow rate of coolant, and a valved model is controlled by restricting the exit of the condenser.
Does a valved design pose the risk of rupture of the column or boiler by limiting the exhaust?
Do I totally misunderstand the process?
The idea of controlling the apparatus with a knob(s) is appealing.

I built one but changed it around a little.PJ Lilly has one also.Mine works good but a bobkbob slant plate is easier to build.What kinds of booze do you want to make?If your going to make whiskeys,rums,brandys etc.Your going to want a short potstill column.The big refluxes are good for 1 thing,Vodka/neutral.
