Hi everyone,

I just worked with a recipe on page 161 in "The Joy of Home Distilling" called "Premium Grain Vodka". The ingredients are wheat malt and flaked wheat. I'm very pleased with the results but I found clearing the mash to be very labor intensive.

I started by carefully siphoning into a carboy and used a metal kitchen strainer to work with the thicker portions from the bottom of the bucket. Afterwards, I used Kieselsol and Chitosan for further clearing and the distillation was successful.

Where it was a successful effort, it was really time consuming clearing the mash as the wheat was so thick and gooey to start with. I was just wondering if anyone else had tried that recipe or something similar to it that could offer any straining/clearing tips. Perhaps that's just the time it takes?

Thanks

It's so quiet here. Where there are larger forums, it would be nice to get this one going again since it is product specific to the Brewhaus stills. So, I'll answer my own question! LOL

I'm going with a brew in a bag for the next effort.

Welcome to the hobby, I have found using a false bottom works best for me. With that being said, I ferment on the grain then put a paint strainer on end of siphon to charge boiler. Good luck and stay safe.
