"I have a still and a hotplate as my heating source. I am not sure if I am doing this right so thought I would ask.
When i run my still, i crank my hotplate all the way and it usually take 1 1/2 to get the temp going good. Once the temp gets high enough, i turn on the water to a small trickle and it starts to flow. I adjust the flow of the output by the water going into the reflux chamber and I do not adjust the hotplate temp, keep it high.
does this sound right?
Sorry that it may be a simple question that I should know, but want to make sure I am doing it right.
I have an 8 gal still with a reflux chamber."

Yep, that's right. Make sure your condenser water is on early & open up the reflux water & let the system run for an hour or so. The slowly lower the reflux water flow until the temp comes back up. You should be able to stabilize the temperature and get a steady flow until you are well into the tails.
