I was tole this by 2 different old timers, up Tennessee way. They raised pumkins, but some years price was so poor, they didn't harvest. Even on good years there were plenty deformed or not pretty that were left in the field. They would cut the tops like a jack o lantern, hollow out enough for a good amount of sugar, replace the cap and leave in the field for a time. When it had worked off, they would go out and dip out the juice. They claimed it made a good pot distillant. It sold for way more than the pumkins.

Sorry, i don't have a recipe for a pumkin pie drink."
