If you use a commercially available electric plate it will probably have a thermostatic control inside it and you will need to bypass it.
This is what happened to me, because it regulates the temperature at the bottom of you boiler and not at the head of the column. Therefore you cannot get it hot enough to go to boil. Most of the ones you can get now are 1200 watts and have a thermostatic control inside.

A 1500 Watt hot plate runs to fast for a good destill.

From a 25liter wash made from 15lbs of sugar I distilled off 3 and half liters. After running i tested with a good alchometer and had.
87% on first
70% on second liter
61% on third liter
59% on tail half liter

Im sure i let a fair amount get away UserPostedImage but will do better next time. Definetely going to add some copper in the seond half of column ,empty now, and run it slower next time.

Strong flavor was evident from the wash in the distillate btw but it is not unpleasant.
