I put 15L of corn mesh in distiller. The first liter of distillate measured 40 % alcohol. after the first liter, the distillate was water. Where did the alcohol go? The SG of the mesh was 1070.

Its almost impossible to get a OSG reading from a corn mash. Too many solids floating around in there to skew it higher. What was your recipe and what for the enzyme conversion? You need to check for conversion., easiest is with iodine.

My guess is that was the issue, unless you had a vapor leak during the run. That has happened to me before."

Was thanked: 15 time(s) in 15 post(s)
"If in fact it was water would'nt that mean it was cooked too hot???? You know to get the water to vaporize it has to be 212F and for ethanol you cook at 173F.
Just a thought"

"Yeah, he really hasn't given us enough imfo. to go on. If he did skim clear off, then I would think a vapor leak.

Heeler, you can't control the temp of the boil, only the volume of vapor comeing off."

"Ill speak from m own experience.
when it comes to making mistakes I top the list. I find that i must openly post what i found the error to be or i will not have learned nor will i help others to correct my mistake or at least to learn from it.
This is why we must post as much information as possible. Actually i found most of my mistakes to be something to laugh about.BigGrin

Well i try to any how lolSad"

"I'm replying to all the good suggestions as follows:
As I reported originally, I did get a liter of good 80 proof at the start. Then water. I determined this by taste and then measured the distillate to confirm no alcohol.
The original SG of 1065 was from a very clean liquid after the solids settled.
It might be a vapor leak but I went through two distilled batches and the same thing happen twice. I think the right answer is it may have been too hot.
I guess I'll go through the process again and keep moore data.
Thanks for all the help."

If your SG is around 1.065 then it never really fermented. You final SG should be closer to 1.000
