I fill it half full cooking temp 185 degrees seems to work ok but it empties I don't think that it should

You are right...it should actually get fuller or remove small amounts of water from your mash as it goes through the thumper that's how it actually increases your proof, by removing a certain amount of water during your run, and that's why lot's of smaller thumper's have a drain valve on the bottom.

From pot distillate goes in thumper inlet, which this tube goes almost
to the bottom of the thumper. Vapor rises through the liquid and goes out
through the exit tube located at the top. The exit tube only extends a
short way down from the top. Vapor goes to bottom rises through whatever
liquid you use (sheds water) and rises and out the top tube. If this was
connected in reverse, it would push the liquid out of the thumper. This
is just my thoughts is why your thumper looses its liquid. Take a look at
some of Brewhaus's thumpers.
