Has anyone cnverted a brewhouse boiler to electric.

"I am in the middle of a mile high nightmare right now. I sent my 6.5 gallon boiler out to have a 1 inch NPT coupling welded to it in order that i might be able to install an internal electric heat element.

The MH boiler develops hair line cracks no mater how the heat is applied. Its not working.
I have read that the MH boilers are made from milk cans that are not intended for welding.
I like the new Brewhaus boilers and will gladly switch to one now if i can get the coupling welded to it.

Any input please.BigGrin"

"The new brewhaus premium boiler is in transit
to me now. Complete with 1 in NPT fitting installed. Its a pitty that i always insulate my boiler. I will be covering up that pretty etching on the unit.


In the meantime, my welder used silver solder to attach the 1 in. NPT coupling to my mile hi 6.5 boiler. The solder wouldnt tin but its attached. I used JB WELD to finish off and strengthen the installation.

Just as a note, 2 years back i had a thermo well installed but we put it through
the top of the boiler which is actually the bottom of
one of the 2 milk cans used to construct the unit. The tube
went in and the weld
was perfect. I guess the base
may be a bit
heavier than the sides.

At any
rate we replaced the insulation that i had cut
away to allow for the coupling installation and added a third layer of insulation while we were at it. I have a little more
aliminum tape to ad so that everything stays in place. I will test the unit later. I have 2 ---
7 gallon batches of wash to run for vodka.

I am anxious to try my variac and internal heat element.

It should be fine with the JB WELD to compensate for the silver soldering that i was not sure of.

Now ill have 2 still if this proves sound.

"I have the basic wiring done. I didnt install the plug because i got cheap and to save 1 dollar, i purchased a plug for wire smaller than #12. Ill go to home depot later and fix that. Probably wasted 3 dollars in gas lol smart ass.

The boiler does not have a place to connect the grounding conductor so i stole 6 inches of green wire from near the heat element. The green tie wraps are just to put th insulation back ove the spot that i stole the wire from.

I don't use the boiler any more but I did use it a few times and it worked ok. I have the 8 gallon premium and want a 15 gallon premium soon. Don't do the stupid thing that I did to ground the green wire, Just take a stainless radiator hose clamp and clamp the green wire to the 1 inch npt coupling

I also installed some heat elements into my boil and sparge pots.

1 inch NPT coupling + 1 inch NPT threaded union. Get the shortest one you can. Then get a few stainless washers that fit over the threads. Also get some red rubber O rings and some silicone. Lots of hard work. I had to re do mine a few times---- But as far as my boiler is concerned. I had Brewhaus weld mine in place when I purchased the boiler.

Well that makes it worth while. What do you use the stainless washers for? So if I sent my boiler to Brewhaus they could weld the fitting for the heating element in place? Thanks for the info hds

The washers are for spacing when I install a coupling that is not welded ; but are NOT used in a welded fitting
