"I am new at this, and personally don't like weird flavors and spices in my rum. The ladies however seem to like it and I wanted to add either vanilla, coconut or pineapple flavor. How are this flavors introduced? Thanks

Confused"

The easiest way is buy an extract liquid (essence). There r lots to choose from here on this site. Since you mentioned rum look under Essences and then Rum Essences and pick one from there. I use vodka essences for white lightin whiskey cause thats where I found the flavors I wanted. But they are cheap enough to try several.
